Islamabad: Pakistan on Monday reported five deaths and 856 new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours. Since January 23, according to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) data, this is the lowest number of single-day casualties.

The country’s positivity rate stood at 2.56 per cent after 33,357 tests conducted during the last day, the NCOC data further reveals.

As per NCOC’s daily update and the health ministry’s COVID-19 graph, Pakistan is witnessing a downward trend in the number of active cases, which now stand below 40,000.

In view of the decline in COVID-19 tendency, the NCOC had revised on Wednesday, COVID-19 related policy for passengers travelling to Pakistan, abolishing pre-boarding negative PCR test for fully vaccinated inbound travellers.

‘Protect Pakistan’

WHO Pakistan has launched a public awareness campaign “Wear a mask, Protect Pakistan” with regard to wearing a mask, keeping social distance and getting vaccination shots.

Country Representative of the WHO, Dr Palitha Mahipala, is distributed masks among the locals in various streets, markets, shopping malls and at bus stops, etc.

“Wear a mask, protect Pakistan, protect yourself and your loved ones,” said Dr Palitha Mahipala in a tweet.

In another tweet, Dr Mahipala said, “Pakistan is doing well but it is always good to have public #health measures. Wearing a mask, practicing hand hygiene and observing social distance is very important. WHO is advocating to everybody to adopt the public health measures.”

Meals allowed in domestic flights

Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has lifted the ban on in-flight meals on all domestic routes as the coronavirus positivity rate continues to drop in the country.

As per the revised SOPs for the flights, wearing masks, maintaining social distance and vaccination are mandatory for passengers.

In January, the aviation regulator imposed a ban on in-flight meals due to a surge in COVID-19 cases. The airlines will be allowed to serve food and drinks to passengers on domestic flights from March 1, 2022.

Passengers below 12 exempted from vaccination

“Travellers below 12 years of age are exempt from mandatory vaccination. Passengers travelling to Pakistan between 12 to 18 years of age are allowed to travel without mandatory vaccination till March 31,” read a statement.

Despite such developments in the country’s COVID-19 situation, medical experts and the World Health Organization (WHO) have called upon the people to follow the standard operating procedures (SOPs) in order to stem the spread of the virus.
